Prospective Volunteer FAQ's
What is the commitment for being a Building Futures volunteer?
Building Futures volunteers commit to meeting with their student for one hour a week for a minimum of one semester. No language skills or previous teaching experience is required - only a desire to get to know an immigrant/refugee student and a dedication to helping them improve their written and oral English.
What is required to become a volunteer?
All volunteers are required to attend a two hour training and complete a background check before they begin tutoring.
When and where can I tutor?
Tutoring sessions are scheduled based on volunteer availability, providing it falls between 7:30 am and 6:30 pm Monday through Friday. Volunteers who are available to tutor between 7:30 am and 2:15 pm are placed in one of the following schools: Waggener High School or Iroquois, Myers, Southern, and Western middle schools. For those whose availability falls between 3:30 and 6:30 pm, tutoring sessions are held during the after school programs at Americana and Arcadia community centers. I speak Spanish. Can I be matched with a Spanish-speaking student?
Volunteer preferences regarding student's language and age and school location can generally be accomodated. The most common language available is Spanish, although French, Arabic, Vietnamese, and some other languages are sometimes possibilities as well.
