Kentucky Refugee Ministries will host their second annual Refugee Film Festival to celebrate Louisville’s growing refugee population. The festival will take place on three consecutive Sundays: July 8, 15, and 22. The films will be shown each Sunday at 3:00 pm at the Elaine Chao Auditorium at the Ekstrom Library at the University of Louisville, 2301 South Third Street. Each film will be followed by a panel discussion with several refugees from the countries represented. The first two Sundays are free, and the final Sunday will cost $10.
These films will focus on major refugee communities in the Louisville area.
The first film, Rain in a Dry Land (July 8 ), follows two Somali Bantu families as they are resettled in the United States. The second Sunday (July 15) features two shorter films, Rosevelt’s America and The Refugee Youth Project. The former follows a Liberian civil servant working as a janitor in Chicago as he tries to reunite with his wife. The latter examines the challenges faced by refugee children trying to integrate into American high school life.
The final selection, God Grew Tired of Us (July 22), highlights the plight of the Sudanese “Lost Boys.” A winner of both the Sundance Grand Jury Prize and Audience Prize, the film is still in theatrical release. Because of the cost involved in screening the film, admission will be $10. |
