Youth Refugee Adventure: Kentucky Refugee Ministries
A Simulation of the Refugee Experience
Kentucky Refugee Ministries invites you to volunteer in an exciting upcoming event, Youth Refugee Adventure. In honor of World Refugee Day, on Saturday, June 18, 2005, KRM is inviting community youth to spend the day as a refugee at Waterfront Park. The goal of Youth Refugee Adventure is to increase understanding and communication among the diverse populations of youth in Louisville.
Youth will participate in a simulation of refugee displacement and exile before settling into a mock refugee camp. UNHCR has created a simulation game of the refugee experience called Passages which will be used to introduce the refugee process and experience. At the mock camp, participants will be required to accomplish simple tasks faced by refugees such as, visiting the health clinic, setting up shelter, completing immigration paperwork and interviews, etc. The day will close in a dinner and discussion.
This is an excellent opportunity for Louisville youth to gain an appreciation for the experiences and views of others, but it will not be successful without the assistance of many volunteers. Since the number of youth accepted depends on the number of volunteers participating, feel free to invite your friends, church group, or social club to become involved.
